There are many ways to define Web 2.0. It can be viewed as a move from the static nature of Web 1.0 to an architecture of participation where users have more control over their own experience as well as be presented with a more contributory, application type interface. This is where the social aspect of the web takes hold.
The concept of Web-as-participation-platform captures many of these characteristics.
Tim O'Reilly, who helped coin the phrase "Web 2.0" offers a simple definition: "Web 1.0 was about connecting computers and making technology more efficient for computers. Web 2.0 is about connecting people, and making technology more efficient for people."
